Ava started to get sick on Saturday night with a little cough and stuffy nose. She was still eating and being her fusty self. Sunday afternoon the cough and stuffy nose got a little worse and she started to have a few apnea spells. By Monday morning the alarms where going off like crazy and the cough was very painful for her. So I took her in and they thought she had RSV so they wanted me to go down to Children's right away. When we got down there the doctor said we are lucky we came down now, because she was getting worse quickly. They started a iv and oxygen right away. We were brought up to 7th floor were it is one nurse to three or four children. Ava was requiring one nurse almost all the time. I asked why it was like this and the nurse told me because of the economy we don't have enough nurses for patients. She was having clusters of spells in a row. She would do great for about two or three hours and then have a cluster of apnea spells. She would not breathe for 25sec. and then breathe for 5, not for 25 and then for 5 which was not good. The one nurse thought she needed to go to 3rd floor to get more attention. The nurse and I were out rated by the inter doctor. (I did not like her very much!) So they kept her there for the night. By yesterday morning the clusters were getting closer together and she slept pretty much all day. So I called South Lake Peds and talked to her doctor and he had a ICU doctor come up and look at her. He sent her to ICU right away. It was pretty scary because by that time she was just laying there. My little fighter was not there. I told them she is a fusty one.
Now she is in her own room with her own nurse. She has a iv, and a machine like a c pap but a step up. She is still having many spells but with this machine when she stops breathing the machine pushes air in to breathe so she can not breathe for long. They are not sure want is wrong with her yet. All the tests so far look great, not saying one could change but so far nothing. They are running more tests. They are hoping that what ever this infection is that it will get better not worse and that the apnea will soon stop or slow down. We will see what happens today. Thanks for all the prayers.
